Stephen “Steve” Sijuwade

Karate rank(5th Dan)

Steve Sijuwade has dedicated over three decades to the study and practice of martial arts. His karate journey began under Rod Martin Shihan, with whom he achieved his Shodan, establishing a strong and disciplined technical foundation.

Steve continued his progression under the esteemed Leo Lipinski Shihan, travelling extensively to Japan to train with leading JKF Gojukai instructors. Under Lipinski Shihan’s mentorship, he successfully attained his Yondan (4th Dan) in Japan. This period marked a significant stage in his development, further sharpening his technical precision and deepening his understanding of Gojuryu’s traditional principles.

Following the passing of Lipinski Shihan in 2018, Steve came under the guidance of Gurmit Singh Shihan, fulfilling his late instructor’s personal request. He has since continued to refine his skills and knowledge through regular training and seminars conducted by Shihan Singh. In 2023, Steve returned to Japan, where he successfully earned his 5th Dan.

Steve holds a strong appreciation for Shihan Singh’s teaching methodology, particularly his comprehensive understanding of the core principles, concepts, and Chinese historical origins of Gojuryu karate.

Based in Greater Manchester, Steve operates multiple karate clubs and has spent more than 20 years delivering karate programmes in educational settings. His work has played a significant role in using martial arts as a platform for enrichment, empowerment, and personal development. Many of his students have progressed to achieve their black belts and continue to benefit from the discipline, confidence, and resilience cultivated through their training.

Steve currently serves as an Examiner and is a member of the IGKKF Development Committee, contributing to the continued growth and development of the organisation.
